The smoke is used to transmit news, signal danger or gather people to a common area.Ī signal lamp is a semaphore system using a visual signaling device, often utilizing Morse code. ![]() The Tower of Hercules at A Coruña, Spain was a Roman 2nd century lighthouse that used a large fire as a warning beacon to passing ships.Ī smoke signal is one of the oldest forms of semaphore for long-distance communication. The lighthouse was built in the 2nd century BC and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which remained one of the tallest man-made structures in the world for several centuries. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was a high tower 100 metres (330 ft) in overall height with a fire on top to provide a navigation beacon for ships in ancient times. A bonfire was set at the first beacon and transmitted down the line to Constantinople. A message could be sent along the line in approximately one hour. The main line of beacons stretched over some 720 km (450 mi) with stations placed from 97 km (60 mi) to 56 km (35 mi). The Byzantine Empire used a system of beacons to transmit messages from the border with the Abbasid Caliphate across Asia Minor to the Byzantine capital, Constantinople. The Byzantine beacon system was a semaphore developed in the 9th century during the Arab–Byzantine wars. Flames were lit on one tower, then the next tower would light a flame in succession. Towers were built on selected mountaintops, so that one tower, the phryctoria, would be visible to the next tower, usually twenty-miles distant. ![]() The Phryctoriae were a semaphore system used in Ancient Greece for the transmission of specific prearranged messages. Semaphores can be used for telegraphy when arranged in visually connected networks, or for traffic signalling such as in railway systems, or traffic lights in cities. A semaphore can be performed with devices including: fire, lights, flags, sunlight, and moving arms. 'apparatus for signalling' from Ancient Greek σῆμα ( sêma) 'mark, sign, token', and Greek -φόρος ( -phóros) 'bearer, carrier') is the use of an apparatus to create a visual signal transmitted over distance. Generally they are red and yellow for signalling between two ships at sea and blue and white for signalling to and from land.Coastal semaphore using moving arms at Scheveningen, circa 1799 Ideally, semaphore flags should be approximately 30cm x 30cm (12in x 12in). J) signal is sent, when they revert to being the letters A- K. A-K only have those alternate meanings after a "Numerals Follow" signal has been sent and will continue to have those meanings until a "Letters Follow" (i.e. The signals which have alternate numeric meanings, i.e. The flags are held, arms extended, in various positions representing each of the letters of the alphabet. The flags are usually square, red and yellow, divided diagonally with the red portion in the upper hoist. The Semaphore flag signaling system is an alphabet signalling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern.
